ExperienceI was a public high school teacher for over two years, and it just wasn't for me - I'm a teacher, not a police officer, so I moved into the private education field.
Currently, I teach at Linden Oaks Hospital in Naperville, where I provide small group instruction and one-on-one tutoring to students hospitalized for mental illness, including eating disorders, depression, school anxiety, and more.
I have significant experience dealing with advanced students, and those who are barely making it by. I will work with all levels, though I generally prefer students who are over the age of 12.
I've worked for Sylvan, Kaplan, Cambridge, and as a one-on-one tutor for many years. I've been a substitute, a summer school teacher, and a regular classroom teacher. I can provide enrichment activities as well as homework help, and can do any mathematics up to and including some calculus, though my skills there are a bit rusty.
I also made a living for a year as a professional writer, and I am an avid reader, so I can help students in any English classes as well.
HobbiesMost students who meet me get along well with me instantly. I use humor and build strong relationships with students to motivate them in areas where they are usually not all that motivated to succeed. I always aim to inspire confidence and promote autonomy.
My primary tutoring experience is with students who are either very advanced for their age, or significantly behind. For those who are behind in levels, I usually bring some remedial practice activities to help build skills before tackling what is assigned by teachers.
